Cristina de Middel sviluppa immagini che stimolano la riflessione nello spettatore. Il suo saggio fotografico “Viaggio al Centro”, che indaga i fenomeni legati alla rotta migratoria attraverso il Messico, ha un’atmosfera e un simbolismo ispirati al celebre romanzo di Jules Verne “Viaggio al centro della Terra”. Con un linguaggio che combina la fotografia documentaria pura con immagini costruite e materiale d’archivio, la narrazione si articola su più livelli. La rotta migratoria attraverso l’America Centrale è ritratta come un viaggio eroico e audace. Il Messico, scenario di questa avventura, viene presentato come il paese affascinante ed estremo che è. Con una mostra ai Rencontres d’Arles 2024 e l’immagine del manifesto ufficiale di Arles 2024: Cristina de Middel viaggia da anni con i migranti sul treno che chiamano “la bestia”, intervistando sicari (sicari a pagamento), parlando per ore con “coyote” (trafficanti clandestini) e agenti di polizia. Combinando le sue fotografie con oggetti trovati nel deserto e filmati d’archivio, crea una narrazione a più livelli.
Il punto di partenza è Tapachula, il confine meridionale del Messico con il Guatemala, e il viaggio termina a Felicity, una piccola città in California che è ufficialmente il “Centro del Mondo”. Questo viaggio epico è scandito dai racconti di tre migranti che raccontano il loro terribile viaggio e dai commenti dell’artista. Una postfazione del giornalista messicano Pedro Anza illumina le questioni in gioco e le conseguenze umane dell’ossessione degli Stati Uniti per la chiusura delle proprie frontiere.

Cristina de Middel develops images that encourage reflection in the viewer. Her photographic essay “Journey to the Center”, which investigates phenomena related to the migration route through Mexico, has an atmosphere and symbolism inspired by Jules Verne’s famous novel “Journey to the Center of the Earth”.
With a language that combines straight documentary photography with constructed images and archival material, the narrative becomes multi-layered.
The migratory route through Central America is portrayed as a heroic and daring journey. Mexico, the setting for this adventure, is presented as the fascinating and extreme country that it is.

Cristina de Middel has been travelling for years with migrants on the train they call “the beast”, interviewing sicarios (hired killers), talking for hours with “coyotes” (clandestine smugglers) and police officers. By combining her own photographs with objects found in the desert and archive footage, she creates a multi-layered narrative.
The starting point is Tapachula, the Southern border of Mexico with Guatemala, and the journey ends in Felicity, a small town in California that is the officially “Center of the World”. This epic journey is punctuated by the accounts of three migrants recounting their terrible journey and commentary by the artist. An afterword by Mexican journalist, Pedro Anza, illuminates the issues at stake and the human consequences of the United States’ obsession with closing its borders.
